Jesus Christ Superstar - 2019
Jesus (Dave Sudlow) with the Lepers

SMTC found itself ahead of a trend when we staged Jesus Christ Superstar in June 2019. Just before our run, news was been released of a 50th anniversary superstar tour of the rock opera in the USA.

While the original Jesus Christ Superstar was set in the 1970s we brought the show into current times and audiences were captivated from the first to the last minute.

Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar is set against the backdrop of an extraordinary series of events during the final weeks in the life of Jesus Christ, as seen through the eyes of Judas. Reflecting the rock roots that defined a generation, the legendary score includes “I Don’t Know How to Love Him,” “Gethsemane” and “Superstar.”

Show director Roger Ashford said: “When Lloyd Webber and Rice wrote the show 50 years ago in the 1970s, they set it in 70s. So why wouldn’t you want to do that with today’s problems and bring it right up to date?
“Our version is set in the now. We’ve respected what we’re working with, but we’ve given it a modern take. It’s powerful, it’s moving and it’s spectacular,” he added.
